The first session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) to develop an international legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, was held from November 28 to December 2, 2022 in Punta del Este, Uruguay.

This meeting came nine months after the adoption of a landmark resolution on plastic pollution at the United Nations Environment Assembly by representatives of 175 countries, during which countries mandated the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to convene and manage the INC process.

Attached is a presentation on the context around the recent negotiations in Uruguay, main outcomes of the first INC meeting, and next steps and the way forward.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to the following email address: plastiques-plastics@ec.gc.ca.

We thank you in advance for your interest and your engagement – only together can we end plastic pollution.
