Overview
The Alberta Plastics Recycling Association (APRA) is seeking a Communications Consultant to assist with the implementation of its communications plan and related outreach activities. Working closely with the Communications lead and broader program team, the consultant will provide hands-on support in content creation, social media management, graphic design, and writing/editing tasks.
This flexible, part-time contract is ideal for an experienced communicator, freelancer, or small agency with strong digital and visual storytelling skills who enjoys supporting purpose-driven environmental and recycling initiatives.
Scope of Work
Communications Plan Implementation
- Support the drafting and rollout of the organization’s annual communications and engagement plan and assistance with the education and advocacy planning.
- Collaborate with the Board and Executive Director to ensure consistent messaging and branding.
- Assist in planning and scheduling regular content across channels.
Content Development & Social Media
- Draft and post content for social media platforms (e.g., LinkedIn).
- Design simple graphics and visuals to accompany posts using Canva or similar tools.
- Monitor engagement and provide recommendations to improve reach and visibility.
Writing & Editing
- Write and/or edit articles, web updates, newsletters, and announcements.
- Ensure clarity, consistency, and alignment with brand tone and key messages.
- Assist in reviewing and proofreading materials for grammar, accuracy, and style.
Qualifications
- Minimum 4-5 years of experience in Communications, Marketing, or Public Relations.
- Degree from a public relations or communications program is preferred.
- Strong writing, editing, and visual communication skills.
- Proficiency with social media management and design tools (e.g., Canva, Hootsuite, Meta Business Suite).
- Experience developing content for non-profits, environmental, sustainability, or circular economy sectors an asset.
- Organized, detail-oriented, and able to work independently on multiple priorities.
Compensation & Terms
- Hourly rate: $35-$50/hour.
- Estimated time commitment: 10–15 hours per month (approx. $6,000 annually).
- Contractor is responsible for their own taxes, insurance, and equipment.
- Availability during business hours (8-5, M-F preferred with some flexibility on hours); deliverables and timelines will be agreed upon monthly.
- Renewal subject to individual performance and organizational budget.
- Remote work and a home office is required. The location must be in Alberta to be available for in-person events held quarterly across the province. Preference will be given to a candidate located in the Edmonton-Calgary corridor.
