APRA Position Statement Engagement Sessions

About This Project

As part of APRA’s 2026–2028 Strategic Plan, advocacy was identified as a key organizational priority and an area where members expressed a desire for increased coordination, engagement, and industry representation. In response, APRA developed an Advocacy Plan and a series of draft position statements intended to support informed, practical, and evidence-based engagement on issues impacting plastics circularity in Alberta.

The position statements are intended to provide a foundation for APRA’s advocacy activities and support constructive dialogue with government, industry, and other stakeholders on emerging policy, regulatory, market, and infrastructure issues affecting the plastics value chain.

Before any position statements are finalized, APRA is engaging members to gather perspectives, identify opportunities and concerns, and ensure the statements reflect the operational realities and diverse viewpoints represented across the membership.

Initial Engagement Topics

The first engagement session will focus on three draft position statements:

Recycled Content Mandates

This position statement explores the role of recycled content requirements in supporting market demand for recycled plastics while recognizing the importance of material availability, infrastructure readiness, product performance requirements, and implementation considerations.

Single-Use Plastic Bans

This position statement examines the use of product bans as a policy tool and considers the importance of lifecycle assessment, evidence-based decision-making, unintended consequences, and the need for practical alternatives and supporting infrastructure.

Reuse Systems

This position statement explores the role of reuse systems within a circular economy and recognizes both the opportunities and challenges associated with scaling reuse models across different products, sectors, and supply chains.
