APRA will post monthly feature articles about our members to showcase their work to improve the circular economy. In June 2025, we connected with BWI-ACME Enterprises Ltd. to highlight its products and services.

BWI-ACME Enterprises Ltd. (BWI) is a packaging and covering solutions company based in Calgary, Alberta. BWI’s mission is to provide its customers with sustainable, high-quality packaging and covering solutions. The company’s vision is to become a leading provider of innovative and sustainable packaging and covering solutions, contributing positively to communities and the environment. BWI is also an ISO-9001 certified and Indigenous-owned and operated company.
BWI offers a range of packaging products, including Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers (FIBCs), bulk bags, and industrial bags. Their sustainable product offerings include FIBCs made from recycled polypropylene (rPP) and recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET), which are manufactured to multi-trip reusable standards to extend their useful life. In addition to products, BWI provides sustainable services such as repairing industrial bags and reusable pallet wrappers.

BWI’s services have been utilized by a Major Canadian E-commerce Fulfillment Center. This center previously used sortation bags that had a limited lifespan and experienced long delivery times from their former supplier. BWI was called in to extend the bags’ lifecycle and reduce company waste. To date, BWI has repaired over 400 sortation bags for this client, helping to divert these materials from landfills.
BWI maintains its presence in local communities through various initiatives. The company regularly donates supplies and funds to organizations in need and participates in Métis community events. BWI is also a donor to the Métis Benevolence Fund and provides collection bags to the Chestermere Food Bank and the Southeast Rocky View Food Bank.

As an APRA member, BWI collaborates with other recycling organizations and companies to promote awareness about sustainable packaging solutions. Quinn Cook, Co-Owner / CEO, notes:
“We value the opportunity to educate APRA members on FIBCs, their applications, construction, materials, recycling designation, etc. It’s important to remember that people who aren’t currently part of a solution could become valuable contributors if they are informed, empowered, or invited to participate, and genuinely care.” – Quinn Cook
A current challenge for BWI is increasing awareness regarding the environmental benefits of utilizing recycled and multi-trip materials in FIBCs. Traditional polypropylene (PP) FIBCs are often not prioritized in the local recycling industry due to economic factors. BWI believes there is a need for more domestic resources to process FIBCs into resins or flakes, allowing them to be repurposed into other products such as park benches and plastic pots, rather than relying on cross-border or overseas recycling solutions.
BWI has seen a common, yet risky, practice in Canada: the reuse and sale of used Single-Trip FIBCs. While admirable to reuse, ISO 21898 standards clearly state these bags are for single use only, primarily for health and safety reasons. Reusing them, especially in questionable condition, poses health and safety risks. They urge companies selling or distributing used FIBCs to switch to multi-trip FIBCs to prevent injuries and accidents.
BWI aims to be a key contributor to sustainable bulk packaging solutions in the future. A significant goal is to establish Canada’s first comprehensive bag refurbishment and recycling program. This initiative would involve collaborating with industry members and other stakeholders to develop a refurbishment and recycling system for FIBCs and other agricultural plastics. BWI plans to continue actively educating organizations and companies about current FIBC recycling issues and the need for systemic change.
“…what we want to be doing is being part of the solution, not continuing to create problems for future generations.” -Quinn Cook
