Contract Opportunity: Program and Advocacy Consultant

Term: Ongoing (Approx. 50-80 hours per month); Ongoing contract with annual contract review.
Compensation: $50–$70 per hour (up to $40,000 annually, depending on experience)
Location: Remote (with some travel or in-person support for events as required)

Overview

The Alberta Plastics Recycling Association (APRA) is seeking an experienced Program and Advocacy Consultant to assist with the delivery of advocacy initiatives, education and membership events (including Alberta Circular Plastics Day (ACPD) and others), and rollout of strategic program plans.

This independent contractor will work collaboratively with the Executive Director and program partners to provide coordination, communication, and logistical support across multiple priority areas.

Scope of Work

Advocacy Support

  • Research and summarize policy or regulatory developments related to recycling, circular economy, and waste reduction, especially as it relates to the plastics circular economy and APRA membership.
  • Prepare briefing notes, background materials, and stakeholder correspondence to support advocacy initiatives.
  • Assist with scheduling and coordination of meetings, consultations, and outreach activities.

Education & Membership Events

  • Provide coordination and logistical support for education and networking events, including ACPD and other webinars, workshops, and conferences.
  • Manage event logistics such as registration, venue coordination, AV liaison, materials, and communications.
  • Support on-site or virtual event delivery, as required.
  • Assist with post-event reporting and participant engagement, such as surveys.

Draft and coordinate member communications. Prepare research and background information for Executive Director on targeted membership outreach.Program Plan Implementation

  • Support rollout of ongoing program and project plans, including scheduling, deliverable tracking, and partner coordination.
  • Maintain project documentation and assist with progress reporting.
  • Contribute to communication materials such as updates, newsletters, or summaries.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in program coordination, advocacy, and/or event planning. Experience in the environmental, plastics or sustainability sectors is preferred.
  • Degree in a related field, such as policy, communications or environment is preferred.
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and online collaboration tools (e.g., Zoom, Teams, Google Workspace).
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Experience working with non-profits, government, or industry stakeholders is an asset.

Compensation & Terms

  • Hourly rate: $50–$70/hour, based on experience.
  • Estimated maximum contract value: $40,000 annually (approximately 50 hours/month).
  • Contractor is responsible for their own taxes, insurance, and equipment.
  • Flexible work hours; deliverables and timelines to be agreed upon monthly.
  • Renewal subject to individual performance and organizational budget.
  • Remote work and a home office is required. The location must be in Alberta to be available for in-person events held quarterly across the province. Preference will be given to a candidate located in the Edmonton-Calgary corridor.
