Assar Grinde is a cow-calf producer in Ponoka County, a former Director with the Alberta Beef Producers and ABP’s representative on the Agricultural Plastics Recycling Group. When he is not parenting, ranching or volunteering, he can be found flyfishing and paddling on Alberta’s many waterways. He can be reached at agrinde@blindmanbeef.ca
Shane Hedderson, Director Western Region, leads Cleanfarms’ operations and program delivery from British Columbia to Manitoba. With over a decade of experience, Shane plays a key role in scaling collection programs, building strong end-market partnerships, and advancing circular economy initiatives that keep agricultural plastics out of landfills and the environment. He played a lead role in bringing the intermediate bulk container recycling project to fruition this year and continues to work with industry and stakeholders on the national bottle-to-bottle initiative. He is an active participant in several Canadian and international industry groups including the Canada Plastics Pact, Croplife Europe working groups, and EPRO (European Association of Plastics Recycling and Recovery Organisations), showcasing the success of Canada’s agricultural industry at home and abroad.
Davin Johnson is the Alberta Program Advisor of Cleanfarms Inc., a non-profit industry stewardship organization committed to environmental responsibility through properly managing agricultural plastic packaging and product waste. He has worked with Cleanfarms since 2013 as a consultant in the unwanted pesticide and animal health medication collection program and now coordinates all of Cleanfarms’ stewardship programs in Alberta.
Jennifer Koole is the Executive Director of the Recycling Council of Alberta, a non-profit organization with over 350 members. With a degree in environmental science, many years in municipal government, and international experience as a zero-waste consultant, Jennifer brings both technical insight and on-the-ground perspective to advancing circular economy and waste reduction initiatives. She’s passionate about connecting people and ideas to drive collaboration, spark innovation, and help communities, businesses, and policymakers reimagine waste as a valuable resource in building a more sustainable future. Jenn sits on the APRG executive committee.
Don McKenzie is the Owner of McKenzieIBC, a 2nd generation family business specializing in packaging solutions for Agricultural, Industrial and Food/Beverage Inputs. With a focus on IBCs – (Intermediate Bulk Containers), McKenzieIBC has been influencing packaging designs and finding unique solutions for critical value chains for over 32 years! A subject of intense pride, McKenzieIBC has been the dedicated Canadian representatives of Snyder Industries, North America’s largest Rotational Molder for its 32+ year tenure. Many of the popular packaging designs in both Ag and Industrial chemical service can trace back to Snyder Industries and McKenzieIBC. In a successful multiyear partnership with Cleanfarms (Canada), McKenzieIBC and Snyder Industries have been able to achieve the Agri Industry’s 1st truly circular (recycled) packaging outcome.
Jarrett Rydall is new to the plastics recycling industry. He started his career in plastics recycling, February of 2020 when he took on the roll as Plant Manager for PolyAg Recycling Ltd., an agricultural film recycler based out of Bashaw, AB. Over a short period of time Jarrett gained a vast knowledge of PCR manufacturing and the mechanics of the equipment. Jarrett continues to manage the Bashaw facility under the new ownership, Revolution Sustainable Solutions (Canada) Inc. as of January 2024.
Tammy Schwass is the executive director of the Alberta Plastics Recycling Association (APRA). APRA is dedicated to the goals to advance plastic circularity. APRA is a conduit of information in the diversion of plastics from landfill and makes introductions among stakeholders to build important relationships. Its membership consists of plastics resin producers, manufacturers, fabricators, converters, wholesalers and retailers of plastic products, along with plastics recyclers and other members of the recycling community. Tammy is the secretary, of the Agricultural Plastics Recycling Group (APRG), a group of over 20 organizations representing commodity groups, industry, non-profits, government and municipalities looking for solutions to manage agricultural plastics in Alberta.
Benson Thoudsanikone
Darryl Wolski is the Director of Sustainability for Merlin Plastics and has been with the company for 10 years. Merlin Plastics is a recycler and processor of post-consumer and post-industrial plastic container packaging. Its high value, quality recycled plastic products are being integrated into various commercial and industrial industries as an alternative to virgin resin for manufacturers to produce similar or alternative consumer goods. Merlin Plastics continuously works with brand owners, retailers, and industry associations to improve packaging design for recyclability as well as develop alternatives for ongoing sustainable solutions.
